If you have ever wondered why zine tools and booklet exporters insist on page counts that are multiples of 4—or why a 5-page PDF suddenly grows three blank pages—the answer is not marketing fluff. It is sheet geometry.

Saddle-stitch imposition maps reader pages onto physical sheets. Each sheet has four slots. Until N % 4 === 0, those slots cannot close into a single nested signature. This post walks through the why, then shows the concrete 8-page and 16-page orders.

Imposition in one paragraph

Imposition does not rewrite your text. It remaps logical page numbers onto printable impressions. For saddle stitch at 2-up:

  • Each side of a sheet holds two reader pages (left and right of the fold).
  • Sheets nest: outermost sheet wraps the cover and last page; innermost sheet becomes the center spread.
  • You fold the entire pile once and staple through the spine. That is one signature.

This is different from perfect bind (folios stacked at a glue edge) and from spiral. If you need those binds, do not reuse a saddle-stitch sheet table.

A practical overview lives at How to impose a PDF for saddle stitch.

Why multiples of 4

Count the slots on one sheet:

Impression Slots Front left, right Back left, right

That is four reader-page slots per sheet. An 8-page booklet uses 2 sheets × 4 slots. A 16-page booklet uses 4 sheets × 4 slots. A 5-page PDF cannot fill four-slot sheets without empties—so a sane imposer appends blanks at the end until N is a multiple of 4. It should not drop your authored pages.

Examples:

  • 1 page → pad to 4
  • 5 pages → pad to 8
  • 8 or 16 pages → no pad needed

Pads usually show as blank in a Sheets preview. Outer-left on the outermost sheet is still N (the last page number after padding), which may be a blank if you padded—not your last authored page if that page landed elsewhere.

8-page order (two sheets)

For N = 8, sheet 0 is the outer wrap; sheet 1 nests inside.

Sheet Front L / R Back L / R 0 outer 8 / 1 2 / 7 1 inner 6 / 3 4 / 5

Reading order after fold: 1 → 8. Page 1 sits front-right on the outer sheet (the cover). After folding, the innermost back (4 / 5) becomes the center spread; the innermost front is 6 / 3.

Printing the source “as-is” (1 beside 2) is calendar layout, not booklet layout. After export, PDF page 1 of the imposed file is outer Front; PDF page 2 is outer Back. Keep that order when duplexing.

Full worked example: 8-page booklet page order.

16-page order (four nested sheets)

Same formula with N = 16:

Sheet Front L / R Back L / R 0 16 / 1 2 / 15 1 14 / 3 4 / 13 2 12 / 5 6 / 11 3 10 / 7 8 / 9

The center spread is 8 / 9 on the innermost back. Export yields eight PDF impressions (Front/Back × 4 sheets). At this length, creep (inner sheets shifting toward the fore-edge when folded on thick stock) starts to matter; gutter is still a uniform inset at the spine edge on every sheet.

A mental formula (optional)

You do not need to fill tables by hand for production. The pattern for sheet index i (0 = outer) with S = N/4 sheets is the usual nested pairing: outer right is always page 1; outer left is always N; backs continue the pairs toward the center. Implementations differ in code style, but the slot invariant is fixed: four slots per sheet, nest inward.

If you are building tooling yourself, write tests against the 8- and 16-page golden tables above before you trust padding or creep.

Print notes (so the order survives the printer)

After you have an imposed PDF:

  • Duplex, flip on long edge for landscape 2-up
  • 100% / actual size (no fit-to-page)
  • Printer booklet mode off (do not impose twice)
  • Fold all sheets together as one signature; staple the fold

Browser-local imposers (no server upload) are a good fit when the PDF is private or when you just want geometry without a desktop suite. One such tool is Booklet Imposer—preview Sheets / Reader / Spreads, optional gutter and creep, then export.

What not to expect

  • Not perfect bind / spiral / multi-signature imposition
  • Not merge, split, or compress
  • Not a color RIP—page geometry only
  • Not affiliated with Adobe Acrobat or any printer driver
