The thread started with a simple question about whether to split the service. Four days later it has sixty replies, three side arguments, two proposals that half merged, and a manager who has just written: can someone tell me where we landed?

Nobody answers for a while, because nobody is sure. That pause is an opportunity, and most engineers let it pass.

Whoever writes the summary has a quiet kind of influence. Their version becomes the version. It is what the manager reads, what gets forwarded to the people who were not in the thread, what gets pasted into the planning document next month. Almost nobody goes back to read the sixty messages. They read the six lines.

That is exactly why the summary has to be fair, and why a fair one is worth so much to the person who writes it.

Keep it short and structured. What we are deciding, in one sentence. The options that are still genuinely on the table, not every idea that was mentioned. For each one, the strongest argument for it, written the way its supporters would write it. What we agree on, because there is usually more of that than the thread makes it look. And what is still open, with the specific question that would settle it.

The hardest part is the option you disagree with. Describe it well enough that its biggest supporter would nod. If you tilt the summary towards your preference, somebody will notice, and after that nothing you summarise will be trusted. If you represent the other side generously, people start to rely on you to tell them where things stand, and that is a far more useful position than having won one argument.

End with a proposed next step and a name. I suggest we decide at Thursday’s planning. Priya, could you bring the numbers on the migration cost? A summary without a next step just becomes another message in the thread.

You do not need seniority to do this. You need to have read the thread carefully, which most people have not, and to be willing to go first. Try it once. You will notice how quickly the replies after yours become shorter and more focused.
