What is the best way to manage a PHP project?

I’m currently learning PHP and working on a PHP project. I want to properly manage my source code, track changes, and keep my project backed up online.

For a beginner, would you recommend using Git + GitHub, or are there better tools for managing PHP projects?

What tools and workflow should I learn first?
