Tasbazi

When I started building Tasbazi — a free online multiplayer platform for Backgammon (Takhte Nard), Hokm, Shalm,Charbarg and Domino — I thought the hardest part would be the game logic. I was wrong. The hardest part was making it feel instant.

Here’s what I learned after years of running a real-time multiplayer game platform.

The Stack
Backend: Node.js
Real-time: Socket.IO
Frontend: Vanilla JavaScript
Infrastructure: Cloudflare CDN

Simple on paper. Brutal in practice.

Challenge 1: Handling Disconnects Mid-Game

The most common complaint in any multiplayer game: “my opponent disconnected and I lost my progress.”

Our approach:

Each game state is stored server-side, not client-side
On reconnect, the server pushes the full current state back to the client
A grace period timer gives the disconnected player time to reconnect before forfeiting

This alone eliminated 90% of disconnect-related complaints.

Challenge 2: Move Validation — Never Trust the Client

In backgammon, every move has to be validated against dice rolls, board state, and turn order. Early on we validated moves only on the frontend. Bad idea — it opens the door to cheating.

The rule we follow now: the server validates every single move. The client is just a display layer. If the server rejects a move, it gets rolled back on the client immediately.

Challenge 3: The Doubling Cube

Implementing the doubling cube was one of the more interesting challenges. Our rules:

Each player gets one cube request per game
Opponent accepts → stakes double, cube passes to them
Opponent declines → they forfeit the game
Maximum 4x stakes per game

The tricky part was syncing cube state between both clients in real-time while also handling the edge case where a player disconnects exactly when a cube offer is pending.

Challenge 4: Tournaments

Beyond casual games, Tasbazi runs daily free and paid tournaments for Backgammon players. Competitive tournament play adds a whole new layer of complexity to the platform:

Bracket management and automatic progression between rounds
Real-time leaderboards updated after each match
Separate prize pool handling for paid tournaments

Challenge 5: Performance at Scale

Game platforms live and die by latency. A few things that helped:

Cloudflare CDN for static assets
AMP pages for the marketing/landing pages (currently hitting 99/100 on PageSpeed mobile)
Socket.IO rooms per game table — no unnecessary broadcasts
Minimal payload per move event — only delta state, not full board
What I’d Do Differently
Start with server-side validation from day one (not after getting burned)
Build a proper game state machine earlier — ad hoc state management gets messy fast
Invest in reconnection logic before launch, not after
