Kickbacks.ai went viral in early June 2026: replace Claude Code’s “Discombobulating…” spinner with ads, get ~50% of revenue.
But Kickbacks isn’t the only option — and the risks aren’t obvious.
I built AIWaitIndex — a free, independent comparison site for this new category.
What’s a “wait-state” ad?
While an AI coding tool is thinking, you see a spinner or status line. Startups now sell that moment to advertisers and share revenue with you (or the app publisher).
New inventory. Launched ~2 weeks ago. Still early.

Honest earnings math
One HN user reported ~407 impressions in 3 hours → $4.43 (~$11 CPM).
Using typical usage (4 hrs/day, 20 prompts/hr):
- Kickbacks (50%): ~$21–36/month
- IdleAds (70%): ~$30–50/month
- Idlen (70%, if you build your own app): ~$50–100+/month
The risk nobody mentions
Kickbacks patches Claude Code’s rendering layer. Not officially supported by Anthropic. Their ToS disclaims affiliation.
Before installing at work:
- Check employer extension policy
- Read the privacy policy
- Verify payout is live, not “coming soon”
Safer path: Idlen SDK or Sponsoric API — you integrate in your app, no patching third-party tools.
Who should use what
- Solo dev, Claude Code daily, accepts risk: Kickbacks or IdleAds
- Building your own AI app: Idlen SDK or Sponsoric API
- Corporate / risk-averse: skip consumer extensions; wait for publisher-native options
- MCP agent builder: picoads (CPC/USDC) or Sponsoric
What’s on the site (all free)
- Side-by-side comparison table
- Client-side earnings calculator
- Weekly newsletter: AI Wait Slots Weekly
- Static site — no backend, no API keys
