Is the new Steam Controller be applicable to things outside of gaming?

Was able to pick up the controller and play around with it for a couple of weeks. With gyroscope and trackpads, can the controller be applicable outside of gaming? Never develop software with a controller interface but sounds like an interesting idea enough side project.…
