A few years ago the answer was easy — if you cared about performance, you went native. But in 2026 the gap has narrowed a lot. Here’s what I’m seeing in real projects:

For most business apps (booking systems, e-commerce, on-demand services, internal tools), Flutter or React Native now delivers around 90% of native performance at roughly 60% of the cost and time. One codebase, two platforms, faster iteration.

Native still wins clearly in a few cases:

  • Heavy games or graphics-intensive apps
  • Apps needing deep hardware access (advanced camera, Bluetooth peripherals, AR)
  • Situations where every millisecond of performance matters My rough rule now: default to cross-platform unless there’s a specific technical reason not to. The cost savings are hard to justify against for a typical business app, and the developer experience with Flutter especially has gotten really good. What’s your experience been? Are you still reaching for native on client projects, or has cross-platform become your default too? Curious whether the calculus is different for startups vs established companies.
