Programming Is Not About Code

Chapter 1 — Why This Exists

Most people learn programming by learning syntax.
Few people are taught how programmers think.

This guide is about thinking.

Chapter 2 — The Computer Is Not Magic

A computer is not intelligent.
It does not understand.
It executes instructions.

Its greatest strength is speed.
Its greatest weakness is that it only does exactly what you tell it.

The limit is often not the machine.
It is the programmer’s understanding of the problem.

Chapter 3 — What Programming Really Is

Programming is the process of transforming

Problem

Understanding

Algorithm

Code

Execution

Result

Code is only one part.

Chapter 4 — Why Songs Get Stuck in Your Head

Your brain learns patterns.

Programming is also pattern recognition.

Experts don’t memorize solutions.
They recognize familiar structures.

Chapter 5 — Thinking in Inputs and Outputs

Every problem begins with two questions:

What goes in?
What should come out?

Everything in between is the algorithm.

Chapter 6 — Learn Concepts Only When Needed

Don’t learn loops because tutorials say so.

Need to repeat something?

Now you need a loop.

Need to choose between two actions?

Now you need a condition.

Need to remember many values?

Now you need an array.

Problems create the need for concepts.

Chapter 7 — Let Your Brain Cook

Study deeply.

Attempt the problem.

Get stuck.

Take a walk.

Sleep.

Come back.

Your subconscious is good at reorganizing ideas,
but only if you’ve given it material to work with.

Chapter 8 — The Goal

Don’t become someone who writes code.

Become someone who sees problems
and naturally begins breaking them into solutions.

Programming languages will change.

Thinking will not.
