Optio, initially aimed at AI and robotics courses under a Woz Ed STEM track, is pitched as round-the-clock homework support, with expansion toward hundreds of high-school users if the pilot holds. Human educators stay in the room and are expected to do the bulk of teaching while monitoring machine responses.

The setting matters as much as the hardware. Salamanca sits on the Allegany Indian Reservation, serves about 1,300 students, and has a large share of Indigenous and economically disadvantaged families. Superintendent Mark Beehler has argued that students will work around bans anyway, so schools should teach proper technology use. Realbotix and district statements emphasize education-specific guardrails, closed-system operation, no vendor access to personally identifiable student data, and a preference for “I don’t know” over fabricated answers. In demos, crisis-adjacent prompts are said to route students toward trusted adults and alert administrators on flagged terms.

Those claims map to real engineering problems, not marketing footnotes. Classroom assistants fail in production the same way enterprise copilots fail: retrieval misses, overconfident generation, brittle refusal edges, and identity/session leakage. “Say I don’t know instead of hallucinating” is a product goal, not a free property of large language models. Detecting that the next token sequence is ungrounded still requires constrained generation, curriculum retrieval with coverage metrics, logging, and human escalation paths. A seated robot does not solve any of that; it only changes the social interface.

Memory by student ID is the other sharp edge. Personalization that “continues yesterday’s conversation” is useful only if the district can answer hard questions: Who can export transcripts? How long is retention? What is the incident response if a session is mis-attributed? Can a parent or student audit and delete history? Can the vendor’s model updates change refusal behavior mid-semester without a board-visible change log? K-12 systems already struggle with ed-tech sprawl; adding a embodied tutor multiplies surface area because every overheard exchange becomes a data event and a public-relations event.

There is also a curriculum-ops reality. Loading district materials into a robot that can “prompt the teacher” sounds convenient until version control collides with lesson plans, special-education accommodations, and local assessment rules. Without continuous evaluation—wrong-answer rates, unsafe-completion rates, escalation latency—the pilot becomes a demo loop with a press release at both ends.

Trade-off and TCO Breakdown

The sticker is not the total cost of ownership. Fifty-eight thousand dollars buys a discounted M-series unit and software packaging; it does not buy perpetual reliability. A serious TCO line items the full stack: integration with identity and learning systems, on-site power and AV, staff training, substitute coverage when the robot is offline, privacy counsel, security review, content refresh each curriculum cycle, and the human time spent reviewing machine answers before they harden into “the robot said.” Union critics are not wrong that the same budget can purchase human paraprofessional hours with clearer accountability chains.

Embodiment adds cost without automatically adding learning science. Silicone skin and facial motors raise maintenance, spare-parts risk, and vendor lock-in relative to a laptop chatbot that delivers the same tutoring functions. If the educational value is primarily dialogue, retrieval, and after-hours help, the robot is a premium interface tax. If the value is student engagement in a robotics course, then success metrics must be engagement and skill transfer—not photo ops.

Opportunity cost is sharper in an underserved district. Every procurement hour spent on a showcase humanoid is an hour not spent on broadband equity, tutoring bandwidth, special-ed staffing, or boring infrastructure that compounds. AI literacy can be taught with far cheaper, auditable tools. The expensive failure mode is not that Sally says something odd once; it is that the district normalizes an opaque assistant before it can measure accuracy, privacy residual risk, and teacher workload.
