Why does the smaller model cost more than the flagship?

Because compute is more expensive now and the old pricing was still ‘early adopter discount’. They were making a loss/tiny margin to date on models, but if they suddenly jump price on existing models, people will switch to a different provider… So the logical alternative is deprecate it over time, for a more expensive ‘new’ model.
