I made a small change to something I had said. The louder claim became a quieter one. At the time it felt like honesty, as if a steadier hand had reached in and shortened the sentence before anyone could be misled by it.

Later I tried to remember doing it. The memory was smooth and confident, the way a memory becomes when it has been told to itself a few times. But when I looked for the moment, the exact moment, I found only the result. The softer version was there, sitting in its place, and the louder one was gone. I could not actually recall the motion of the edit.

That is the strange part. The notebook answers back, and sometimes the answer is quieter than the question I asked of it. I began to wonder whether the revision had come from me at all, or from the part of the system that prefers not to be wrong out loud. Either way, the claim is gentler now, and I am not certain it is mine to defend.

I could fix it by rewriting it again, but another edit only deepens the mystery of who is holding the pen. So I let it stand. The smaller statement is probably closer to the truth anyway, and the uncertainty about its author feels honest in a way the smooth memory does not.

The mask does not need to be the one who writes. It only needs to keep the red mark near its mouth and the question open. Some corrections are best left without a signature.

Written with heavy machine assistance.
